What is the Sacral Chakra?
The Sacral Chakra is our second chakra and is located about 2-3 inches below the navel. The Sanskrit name is Svadhisthana which means “your own place.” This chakra governs our emotional body, creativity, sensuality and sexual energy.
Because this chakra is so rooted in our emotions, it’s also responsible for our relationships and how we relate to others. Associated with the color orange, this vibrant energy rules our passions, pleasures, and feelings and serves as the driving force urging us to enjoy life through all of the senses. As such, it’s very important in terms of the foundation of our feelings and well-being.
The Sacral Chakra is ruled by the element of water and it’s characterized by movement and flow in our emotions and thoughts. It allows you to let go, to move, and to feel changes and transformations occurring within the body. This chakra is crucial in the development of flexibility in our lives - the ability to “go with the flow.” It supports our personal expansion and the formation of our identity.
A Balanced Sacral Chakra
This chakra is about your senses - it allows you to experience the fullness of life. When in balance, you can feel energetic, hopeful, and radiate warmth, playfulness, and good humor. You may feel inspired to seek out adventures in the form of new experiences. Life appears to flow effortlessly, and you appreciate new difficulties. You may also feel increasingly creative.
Imbalances in the Sacral Chakra
Many experiences can lead to a blocked sacral chakra. If you’ve ever experienced body shame, sexual abuse or dysfunction, toxic relationships or critical forms of social conditioning you likely have an impaired sacral chakra. If you’re unsure whether your Sacral Chakra is in balance, we invite you to explore a few questions:
- Do you struggle with being open to positive change?
- Are you greedy for sensation or experience?
- Is your outlook on life overly emotional or too negative?
- Do you feel overwhelmed?
- Are you connected to and aware of your emotions or do you tend to numb your emotions?
An imbalance in this chakra can result in constant flux, an inability to ground yourself or to set boundaries. You may also find yourself becoming over-emotional or dramatic. Feelings like guilt, lust, betrayal, and jealousy may arise. You may feel that you don’t have the ability to change and this can lead to aggression, false displays of emotion, and denial of pleasure or fear of sex.
Chakra Anatomy states that the primary challenge of the second chakra stems from the conditioning of our society. Sometimes the world doesn’t value feelings and emotional reactions are frowned upon. We are taught not to “lose control” and this causes us to become disconnected from our feelings.
On top of that, we also experience the wounds of our collective cultural struggles over many sexual issues of our society. “On one hand, sexuality is magnified and glorified - on the other hand, it’s rejected and shamed. This results in a blocked or overactive Sacral Chakra.
When our Sacral Chakra is out of alignment, you may find yourself feeling unemotional or withdrawn. You may experience feelings of boredom, exhaustion or that there’s nothing exciting about life to look forward to. Here are a few additional indicators that could be letting you know your Sacral Chakra needs to be nurtured.
- Dependency or co-dependency
- Feeling numb or out of touch with yourself and your emotions
- Overindulgence in fantasies
- Lax of sexual desire
- Feeling stuck in a particular feeling or mood

Sacral Chakra Meditation & Ritual
As with any meditation, you’ll want to cleanse the space of any negative or stagnant energy by burning locally harvested herbs. Find yourself in a comfortable seated position, keeping the spine straight and limbs relaxed.
Begin to focus on your breath - inhaling and exhaling deeply. Envision an orange wheel of light spinning over your sacral chakra. As the wheel spins, imagine ripples of energy spreading out in waves slowly enveloping your body. Once you feel the energy is covering your whole body begin to recite affirmations that will help align any imbalances within this chakra.
Sacral Chakra Affirmations
Here are a few sample affirmations that you can use in your meditation:
- I love and enjoy my body
- I have healthy boundaries
- I’m passionate
- I feel pleasure and abundance in my life
- I value and respect my body
Continue this practice until you feel each affirmation imprinted into your being. When you feel your meditation is complete, gently bring your hands to heart center. Offer gratitude for your experience and for your healing.
